Chocolate Easter Peeps

Do you know someone who loves Easter Peeps? Most of us do. Make them a little more unique and special this Easter by adding chocolate and sprinkles to them.

Items You'll Need:

  • Candy Peeps (any color or shape)
  • Chocolate candy wafers or chocolate chips
  • Decorative sprinkles
  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Parchment or waxed paper
  • Plate or cookie sheet
  • Fork or spoon (for stirring)
  • Clear treat bags (optional)
  • Ribbon (optional)

1. Unwrap the Peeps and set them aside. Line a cookie sheet or plate with parchment or waxed paper. Spread sprinkles onto a plate.

2. Pour chocolate into microwave-safe bowl to melt it. You can use chocolate candy wafers (sold at almost all craft stores), or chocolate chips. I prefer the wafers because they seem to work better on the Peeps.

The most efficient and easy way to melt candy wafers is: 1) Place wafers in a microwave-safe bowl; 2) Microwave for 30 seconds at half power or on the defrost setting; 3) Stir wafers (wafers will not change shape when melting unless stirred--don't assume the wafers are not melted if they still look the same when you peek at them!); 4) Repeat steps 2-3, until wafers are completely melted.

IMPORTANT TIP: Make sure you melt your chocolate a little at a time...chocolate WILL burn if you put it in the microwave too long. If you do burn it, it will look chunky and dry when you stir it (yes, I am speaking from experience!). You can add a little water to it and keep stirring it to try to bring it back to a melted consistency, but it doesn't always work.

3. Once your chocolate is melted, begin dipping the bottom side of the Peeps into the chocolate. You may wish to coat the whole peep, which also looks great. In order to do that, you'll need to use tongs for dipping.

Immediately dip the chocolate coated Easter Peep into the sprinkles that you've spread out on a plate.

4. Place completed Peeps onto the parchment (or wax) lined plate or cookie sheet. Put them in the refrigerator for about 15-20 minutes to allow the chocolate to harden.
