Easter Egg Bread Recipe

Egg bread is a favorite in our house...everyone LOVES it when I make it (even the kids!). It has a sweet taste, so it tends to appeal to the young and old alike.

It can be made to eat as a special treat for Easter breakfast, or wrapped in a pretty box or basket to give as a unique easter present.

I have tried many easter egg bread recipes, and below is the best recipe for egg bread that I've found.

Easter Egg Bread Recipe

Tools You'll Need:

  • 2 mixing bowls
  • Saucepan
  • Mixer
  • Wax paper or saran wrap
  • Baking sheet or baking stone
  • Cooling Rack

  • 6 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp ground cardamom (or ginger)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cup milk
  • 6 Tablespoons butter, cubed
  • 4 eggs
  • vegetable oil
  • 2 Tablespoons water

Cooking Bread:

1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of the flour, yeast, sugar, and cardamom (you can substitute ginger if you don't have cardamom), and salt.

2. In a saucepan, heat the milk and butter to 120-130 degrees F. Add to dry ingredients; beat just until moistened. Add 3 eggs; beat until smooth. Stir in enough of the remaning 4 cups of flour to form a soft dough.

3. Turn onto a floured surface; knead dough until smooth and elastic (about 6-8 minutes). Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 45 minutes to an hour.

3. Punch dough flat. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and divide into thirds. Shape each portion into a 24 inch rope.

4. Place ropes on a greased baking sheet and braid; bring ends together to form a ring. Pinch ends to seal.

5. OPTIONAL STEP (NOT SHOWN IN PHOTO)- If you want to add colored hard-boiled eggs to the top of the bread for a little decoration, now is the time! Separate braided ropes and tuck dyed eggs into openings.

6. Cover and let rise until doubled (about 20 minutes).

7. Beat water and remaining egg; gently brush over dough. Bake at 375 degrees F for 28-32 minutes or until golden brown.

8. Remove from pan to a wire rack to cool. Refrigerate leftovers.
