Candy Cane Hot Chocolate Gifts

Have a lot of candy canes left over from the holidays? If so, use them to make these hot chocolate gifts! They make great party favors, attachments for Valentine's Day cards, or Easter basket gifts. They can be used for just about any occasion that you need a little gift for.

If you are a regular reader of my site and know anything about me, you know that I HATE to throw things away that can be used for something. It's a complete waste of resources.

As I was doing some spring cleaning, I came across a bag of candy canes in our pantry, and wondered what I could use them for. Last year I made candy cane hearts out of our leftover candy canes for Valentine's Day, so I had to come up with something new. This year I decided to make these peppermint hot chocolate sticks for my kids with ingredients that I had around the house, and they loved them! You simply place these sticks in a mug of hot chocolate, and they melt to make peppermint hot chocolate.

What You'll Need to Make Hot Chocolate Gifts:

  • 1 bag of chocolate chips
  • Candy canes
  • Sprinkles, marshmallows, or other decorations (optional)
  • Parchment paper
  • 1 small microwave safe bowl
  • 2 plates
  • Spoon or fork
  • Sandwich bag
  • Treat bags
  • Ribbon

Directions to Make Hot Chocolate Gifts:

1. Break the "hooks" off the end of each candy cane and place them in a sandwich bag.

You can crush the "hooks" inside the bag using your fist (great stress relief!) or other tool (I used the handle of a screwdriver). These crushed pieces are great to sprinkle on the top of your hot chocolate.

2. Pour the bag of chocolate chips into a small microwave-safe bowl, and melt according to package directions. If the package doesn't have directions, I usually microwave in 15 to 30 second increments, stirring in between each increment, until the chocolate is smooth. Be careful not to overcook the WILL burn!

While you are melting the chocolate, cut a piece of parchment paper to fit on a large plate or cookie sheet. Put your decorations on the second plate to "roll" your chocolate coated candy canes in. I used sprinkles, marshmallows, and red hot candies.

3. Remove the chocolate from the microwave and dip each candy cane stick in it to coat. I used a fork to "pick" the chocolate up and coat it.

4. Roll the chocolate coated candy cane sticks in your choice of decoration.

5. Immediately place the decorated stick on your parchment paper lined plate, and put the plate in the refrigerator to harden the chocolate(about 15 minutes).

6. When the chocolate is hardened, place each stick in individually wrapped treat bags, and secure at the bottom with a ribbon.

Another variation of this gift would be to include an instant hot chocolate packet, the candy cane stick, and a small bag of the crushed "hooks."
