Make Hair Clips for Halloween

Make Hair Clips 04

You can easily make hair clips that look like they're from a boutique! I saw decorative clips in a boutique while shopping for my girls and knew that I could make them for less than what they were charging. Hence, this project was born.

Believe it or not, these are really simple and quick to put together...I made all twelve of these in about an hour. (obviously, the more you make, the faster the process becomes).

Items You'll Need:

  • Hair clips
  • Ribbon
  • Decorative embellishments
  • Small foam pieces
  • Hot glue gun or craft glue
  • Scissors

To Make Your Own Hair Accessories:

1. Using a plain hair clip (you can find these down any hair accessories aisle, or try a beauty supply store), measure how much ribbon you will need to cover both the inside and outside of the clip. An easy way to do this is by first placing the ribbon on the inside, pushed all the way to the back, and clipping the clip closed. This will hold the ribbon in place while you wrap it all the way around to measure your length of ribbon. Cut your desired length.

2. Starting on the long inside of the clip, hot glue the ribbon down. Immediately wrap it around to do the outside (opposing side) of the area that you just did. Add a little more hot glue to go around the "pinch" part of the clip (the area that you pinch to open the clip). *Note: make sure that you push the ribbon into the space between the two sides of the pinch as you go around (see photo).

3. Continue gluing the ribbon over the top of the clip, and immediately wrap it around the top to cover the opposing side (the top inside). Your clip should now have ribbon all the way around it, and you should be able to open and close it without a problem.

4. Optional Step: If you decide to, you can glue a small foam piece to the top inside of the clip. This will help keep the clip from sliding in her hair if she has thin hair. Any thin foam will do...I buy mine in the scrapbook department (the foam that they sell to make things 3D).

5. Glue embellishments to the top of the clip...bows, button, little pumpkins, etc. You can look down the scrapbook aisle to find some 3D pieces that will look cute on your clips.

Put these in sandwich bags or treat bags to give out to trick-or-treaters at Halloween. They also make great gifts for little girls who are too small for candy. Have fun making your own hair clips!
