Homemade Peppermint Bark

One year I received a box of Williams Sonoma Peppermint Bark as a holiday gift, and once I saw how quickly my family ate it, I knew that I had to find a way to make the same treat at home!

Want to know how to make your own? No need for you to pour over multiple recipes... along the way, I've probably tried every recipe that exists! Although the finished project looks like it takes a lot of effort, it's actually quite simple to make.

Chocolate Peppermint Bark Recipe

  • 1 (12 ounce) package chocolate chips
  • 1 (12 ounce) package white chocolate chips
  • 24 hard peppermint candies

Directions to Make White Chocolate Peppermint Bark:

1. Line baking sheet with wax paper or aluminum foil.

2. Microwave chocolate morsels in medium, microwave-safe bowl on medium-high (70 percent)power for 1 minute; stir. Microwave at 10-20 second intervals, stirring until smooth.

3. Spread the melted chocolate to desired thickness onto the wax paper or aluminum foil.

Grasp the pan by each end and gently tap the pan onto a flat surface to help spread the chocolate out evenly. Refridgerate for about a half an hour (or until hard).

4. While you are waiting for the chocolate to set, place peppermint candies into a double sandwich bag (a bag inside a bag--it's important to put it in another bag because the outside bag usually gets little holes in it). Crush candies into small pieces using a rolling pin or other heavy object (I usually use a hammer or the handle of a screwdriver).

5. Using the same microwave method described above, melt the white chocolate. When melted, pour it onto the set milk chocolate in the pan and smooth it out to form a second layer.

6. Before the white chocolate sets, sprinkle the peppermint candy onto the soft chocolate so that it will "stick" to the candy. Press the pieces down lightly.

7. Let set until hardened (about an hour). After the candy is set, break it apart to create small "bark" pieces. Store in an air-tight container at room temperature.

Package the candy into small clear bags and tie with a ribbon. Makes a great gift for teachers, coworkers, or anyone you want to give a little something to for the holidays.
