Valentine Gifts

This project came to me when I was trying to figure out what to do with all the extra candy canes from Christmas. Every year we have so many of them left, and I always feel so bad throwing them away.

Don't have any leftovers? The good news is, you can find candy canes in stores for over 90 percent off at this time of year!

Items Needed for Candy Cane Crafts:

  • Candy canes
  • Milk or dark chocolate chips
  • Clear treat bags
  • Ribbon
  • Waxed paper
  • Cookie sheet pan
  • Knife

How to Make Candy Canes Hearts:

1. Melt milk or dark chocolate chips (white chips work well too) in the microwave according to the package directions. Most chips take about 45 seconds at 50 percent power. Stir, and if not fully melted, put them back in for 30 seconds at a time (on 50% power), stirring frequently. Be careful not to cook the chocolate chips too long...they will burn!

2. Line a cookie sheet with wax or parchment paper. Dip the unwrapped candy canes in the melted chocolate, and place them in a heart shape on the lined cookie sheet. Using a spoon, pour melted chocolate on any uncovered areas of the candy cane heart.

3. Place the cookie sheet in the refrigerator until the chocolate is hardened (about 15 minutes). Remove and using a knife, trim any excess chocolate from the edges of the heart.

4. Place completed candy cane hearts in clear treat bags, and top with a ribbon.
